Family camping at the Edinburgh Festivals: What to expect
You’re bringing your family to Edinburgh Festival Camping this summer? That’s awesome. Our families join us too so we know all about what it’s like to bring a family to Edinburgh Festival Camping. Here’s a little bit more about us and the services and facilities we offer so you can plan your family camping trip.
1. WE ARE A NORMAL CAMPSITE (JUST MORE AWESOME)
This might sound really silly, but we get asked loads what the campsite is like and what families should expect. We’re not a big music festival campsite like Glastonbury or V Festival, our campers are tourists, visitors and performers and staff at the Edinburgh Festivals. We’ve got a few extra facilities to make our guests stay more enjoyable and comfortable, but otherwise please think of us as your friendly, grassy, holiday campsite.
2. BRING THE BIKES (& ANY OTHER GAMES YOU LIKE)
Not sure whether to bring the bikes? Bring them! Our tent camping area has a circular tarmac road that goes around the site, perfect for bikes and scooters, and vehicle access in this area is limited to arrivals and departures. If you’re staying in a Meadow Pitch, the whole field is grassy and there’s designated playing areas for kicking footballs around. If you usually bring Swingball (now considered retro?!?), then please bring Swingball, and likewise with any other outdoor games. We do our best to provide some too outside the tipis and in the Meadow, including badminton nets, footballs, bat and ball games and garden boules.
3. WILL THERE BE OTHER KIDS THERE?
Yes. There usually is, and they’re normally found kicking a football or playing games outside the tipis!
4. DESCRIBE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL CAMPING IN 5 WORDS
Relaxed. Friendly. Social. Clean. Different.
Ooh, that’s hard!
5. ARE THE TIPIS FAMILY FRIENDLY?
Yes, our kids (aged 2 – 7) certainly hang out in them! The tipis are an Official Fringe Venue, as well as a licenced bar, so they’re great for a hot chocolate before bed (and a little treat for the adults…) Last year we had nightly entertainment – musicians, comedians, poets, dancers, magicians and more – unsurprisingly, Disney night was a massive hit! We work really hard to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, so this space is for all and any non-age appropriate entertainment is held onto until after bedtime!
We think of the tipis like a lounge or living room, and we invite you to too. It’s the main social space, you can bring your own food in if you don’t want to eat in your tent, and we have a number of board games for different ages to play with. This space is for everyone, so come enjoy it.
6. CAN WE BUY BREAKFAST?
Yes if you like! Our aim to be an affordable accommodation option is reflected in our food and bar prices. We offer breakfast daily from 07:30 til 10:30am with cereals, toast and bacon rolls, then hot paninis through the day from 11:00am, and an evening special for dinner. For example, for breakfast, cereal + toast and a hot drink (tea, filter coffee or hot chocolate) is £3.50 per person. At the bar, a bottle of beer or a glass of wine is £2.50 and a soft drink is £1. If you can’t be bothered to cook, it’s no problem.
7. CAN I BRING A CAMP STOVE OR BBQ?
Absolutely! We ask that BBQs are off the ground and we don’t permit campfires as it ruins the grass, but otherwise please bring your BBQ or camp stove! We have a free camp kitchen with a few communal pots and pans in, but if you have your own kit, we’d recommend bringing it – certainly plates and cups!
8. ANYWHERE YOU’D SUGGEST FOR A DAY OUTSIDE OF THE CITY?
We’ve come up with a list of Family Days out within 30 minutes drive of Edinburgh Festival Camping. There’s so much to do in Edinburgh, but there are some amazing places, including historic castles on islands that are fantastic for capturing imaginations!
If you are breastfeeding your child, we support you. There are no “designated areas”, you are welcome to nurse your child when and where you like.
