Since the campsite first opened in 2015, we have been hosting volunteers who have helped us create, run and maintain Edinburgh Festival Camping. 200+ individuals from over 30 countries have joined our team and helped us create the reputation we now have and we cannot thank them enough! Our campsite is about making our customers feel welcome and looked after, and it is our happy campsite crew (family!) that make this happen.
It works really simply: a volunteer comes and stays with us for free in exchange for 4 hours work a day.
When you volunteer with us, you will have the opportunity to learn some new skills, do different types of jobs and have fun. As it’s only 4 hours a day, you’ll have the remaining 20 hours to enjoy Edinburgh and the Festivals.
We have a number of veteran volunteers who have stayed with us for two or three years so we must be doing something right!

Both the management team and volunteers will work to create our campsite, starting with putting up tents, building giant tipis and creating facilities for our customers to use – a camp kitchen, bar, venue stage area, check in areas, information points etc. During the operation of the campsite (5th – 30th August 2021), we run the campsite, creating customer services, campsite maintenance, running a cafe and bar and, very importantly, cleaning!
We ask for a minimum of 7 days, but volunteers are welcome to stay for the whole event. We will need help from the first day of set up on 31st July to when we lock our gates on 2nd September 2021 (last night is the 1st September).
Tasks will include:
Volunteers will be sent information about the campsite before they arrive which they must read. We pride ourselves on providing fantastic service so it is essential that our volunteers have the knowledge and understanding that it is up to us to ensure our guests have a brilliant stay.
Further training will be provided on site, and a high level of English is required to work on Check In or customer service roles.
Stephanie, student, Germany, 2017 – I spent three weeks this summer at the Campsite right outside of Edinburgh and it was marvelous! I was working with the best team (and by team I actually mean family!) and I hope I will find the time to come back again next year.
Lynne, happily retired, UK, 2015 – 2019 – I liked being able to visit the fringe either before or after your shift and the flexibility of the shifts to accommodate this… Loved volunteers night, it was great to socialise and get to know the other volunteers better.
When you sign up you will receive an email with further information. Please get in touch if you do not receive this, and check your Junk Email folder in case it gets mistaken for spam!
Applications will be reviewed from March 2021 onwards and we will only confirm positions once we’ve been in contact with you. Training material will be sent out via email so it’s really important that you receive the email from us after you submit your application!
If you do not let us know that you would like to accept the position, it may be allocated to another applicant.
We look forward to hearing from you!
